The passage that I picked described how Dr. Flint beat Linda when he found out that she was pregnant with Ellen. The description of Linda’s hair being cut off was hard to read. The way the author describes her hair, it seems that it is one thing in her life that she likes, and the way that Dr. Flint just walks in and cuts it off made it seem like he was cutting off a part of her. The author also refers back to abuse in the past, the look back in time shows that the physical abuse is not something new, so it causes the reader to feel even worse about the situation. The quote from the doctor saying that he will not hurt Linda again is also an appeal to emotions because I want to believe it so badly, but from her past experience I know that it will continue to happen. The author makes the abuse seem so real that the reader can only begin to imagine the pain that Linda was going through.

I almost wrote about this moment as well because it was hard to read for me as well. It's sad that Dr. Flint said he wouldn't hurt her, but keeps forgetting his promise and beats her. I found that part especially sad. Also, when she told Dr. Flint that she was pregnant, I was glad that she had outwitted him from getting her, but yet I was also afraid of what the future would bring for her, since she denied him and went to another white man.
I agree that the situation describing Linda being a recipient of Dr. Flint’s abuse provokes emotion and sympathy for Linda naturally. We are shown a situation that is so helpless and wrong, an innocent woman that has to endure this abuse simply because law says it is his rights as a master to treat a person however he pleases. It generates emotions in me because I understand that it is wrong and can’t believe that a society could allow for this to happen. It is upsetting to me that people during this time could treat others this way and not think for one second that what they were doing was wrong.
