I was driving by Spring Mill School yesterday on my way to the gym and I realized that I had not slowed down for the school zone. I then remembered that Spring Mill has been closed because of swine flu until next week. This led me to wondering if I needed to slow down in the school zone since technically school was not in session. The school zone sign says 7-4:30 on school days, so what constitutes a school day. Is it the fact that there are children in the building or is it any day that is a Monday through Friday? I ended up slowing down for the school zone speed limit because I didn’t want to find out what the true rule was, but I think that there needs to be more specific rules in school zones. If you think about it, there are many possible questions about when the lowered speed limit applies.

I am not very good with knowing about when to slow down in school zones either....BUT I think that when there is a flashing light that means that we need to slow down. Also how scary is it that the Swine Flu is that close to us...I don't know about you but I freaked out when I heard that.
Here's an even better question- Swine flu is an airborne disease so would you even want to slowdown in front of a place where there was a reported swine flu case? Piggy germs could have been in the air by the school and that would have flown into your car window if you were not going at a pretty rapidly paced speed. 25 mph wouldnt cut it and you would be screwed when you started oinking at random. All because you obeyed the law and went the limit posted in the school zone.
That's a good point...I don't go by there very often so I hadn't thought about that. I don't think that the school zone should count when the school isn't in session, but how do people know for sure that the school is in session or not if they hadn't heard about the whole swine flu thing? Were the lights flashing as you went by? But.. as Maggie points out, if you get sick, we know why :P

I completely agree with you! Over the summer I was driving past College Wood Elementary school and the school year hadn't even started. The little flashing yellow light that signals that the speed limit currently is the one that is posted as a "School Zone" wasn't flashing so I kept on driving 45mph, and of course there was a popo sitting in the intersection across the street and then those flashing lights came after me. Thankfully the cop was friends with my dad and he let me go without a ticker or anything but I would advise everyone to ALWAYS go the school zone speed limit even if it is 3am on a July morning.
