Yes, subservience is a necessary part of living. In Wright’s case it was necessary because the only way he could have a job and survive in the south was to do what the white people told him to do. He goes against subservience when it comes to how he treats his Uncle Tom and the other people around him, but the majority of his time is spent doing what other people want, whether he likes it or not. It also applies to everyday life for anyone. Following the law would be considered subservience because the law tells people what they can and can’t do. If subservience was not a part of everyday life than people would be running around doing whatever they wanted without caring about anyone else. Subservience isn’t just a necessary part of society, but it is a part of everyone’s life.

I think you make an interesting point about subservience regarding society and how everyone has to be subservient. When I answered, I thought only about subservience regarding Richard and his world. I thought about how subservience is about willingly obeying a person or a group. Richard clearly didn't want to follow this, but in most aspects he had to.
I thought it was interesting how mentioned how we are subservient to the law. I have never thought of it that way, but it is true, and it's interesting that you thought of that. I mentioned how people in general are subservient to teachers in schools in order to learn and their bosses for jobs in order to make money and to survive. I also thought it was interesting how you mentioned that Richard wasn't subservient to his Uncle Tom, but is in order to keep a job and survive in the South.
